During the Patriot War (an attempt in 1812 to foment a rebellion in Spanish East Florida with the intent of annexing the province to the United States) an important confrontation on Sept. 11, 1812, between Spanish and American fighting forces takes its name from the swamp: "The Ambush at Twelve-Mile Swamp."
